Barfoot & Thompson Managing Director Recognised in King’s Birthday Honours

Peter Thompson, Managing Director of Barfoot & Thompson, has been recognised in the 2025 King’s Birthday Honours in New Zealand for his longstanding contributions to the real estate sector and community.

The annual honours list celebrates individuals whose service across business, community and professional fields has had a meaningful impact nationally.

Thompson leads Barfoot & Thompson — New Zealand’s largest privately-owned real estate agency, headquartered in Auckland and operating across Auckland and Northland — with deep family ties to the business that date back to its founding in the 1920s.

Starting his career in 1981 in the rental division of the Otahuhu branch, Thompson worked across sales, administration and management roles before becoming a Director in 1997 and Managing Director in 2005.

Under his leadership, the company has remained family-owned while growing its market presence and operational scale.

Beyond business performance, Thompson has been active in broader industry and community initiatives. He has served on the board of Auckland Rugby and continues to be involved with realestate.co.nz, an industry web portal.

He has previously been recognised with life memberships from the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand and Auckland Rugby, and received a leadership award at a global real estate conference in 2024.

Industry observers note that honours such as these reflect not only commercial success but also a sustained commitment to service, leadership and the promotion of professional standards within the New Zealand property sector.

Thompson’s recognition underlines the role senior leaders play in shaping the industry’s reputation and community engagement.
