Step Back to Move Forward

ree

I’ve always believed that leadership isn’t just about making the tough calls or forging ahead with bold strategies. Sometimes, the most powerful move you can make is to simply step back.

Because when you take a moment to pause, breathe, and shift your perspective, you gain something that’s absolutely essential in leadership – clarity.

This concept might sound straightforward, but in the fast-paced world of real estate, it’s easy to forget.

Deadlines, client demands, and the relentless drive to close deals can sometimes make it feel like you’re running on autopilot. But here’s the thing – leadership without perspective is like navigating without a map.

Perspective Changes Everything

One of the most effective leadership strategies I’ve learned over the years is the importance of viewing situations through someone else’s lens. Whether it’s a team member struggling with targets, a vendor feeling stressed, or a client frustrated with delays, their perspective matters.

Take a recent example at Harcourts Australia. A team member, one of our rising stars, was visibly stressed.

The first instinct might be to push for results or offer surface-level advice. Instead, I chose to step back and ask, “What’s really going on here?” After a quick chat, I realised their challenges weren’t about capabilities, but something personal that was affecting their mindset.

By understanding their perspective, we could craft a solution that supported not just their role, but their well-being.

The result? A win for everyone.

The Human Aspect

Leadership is ultimately about people. It’s not just about KPIs, deals, or numbers on a spreadsheet (though, don’t get me wrong, they’re important too). It’s about human connection.

The next time you’re facing a challenge, take a step back. Look for the human angle. More often than not, you’ll find that many business problems aren’t just “business” problems – they’re people problems.

And when you take the time to invest in people, the so-called "business problems" have a way of sorting themselves out.

Stepping Back Doesn’t Mean Losing Ground

Pausing, reframing, and thinking strategically doesn’t mean halting progress. Quite the opposite. By stepping back, you gain the insights needed to move forward with precision and purpose.

You’d be amazed how many leaders skip this step in the rush to act decisively. But leadership is often more effective when you give yourself the space to reflect, to refocus, and to realign.

Pause

Leadership isn’t about being perfect. Trust me, I’m far from it! It’s about staying adaptable, staying curious, and most importantly, staying human.

The next time things feel hectic, remember this simple mantra – step back to move forward. Pause, take your time, and look for the human element in every scenario.

I promise, your leadership will not only grow, but so will the trust, respect, and productivity of those you lead.

Here’s to leading with perspective.
