Harcourts is taking the opportunity this International Men's Day to acknowledge the vital contributions of men and highlight the unique challenges they face.
The annual observance on 19 November serves as an important moment to foster conversations around men's health, well-being, and their diverse roles within families, communities, and the workplace.
International Men's Day provides a platform to promote positive male role models, address the societal pressures men encounter, and recognise their contributions in all aspects of life, including as carers, a role men often have trouble seeing themselves in.
In Australia, approximately one in three unpaid carers is male, yet they are less likely to seek support for the challenges this responsibility entails.
The day also brings focus to serious issues such as men's mental health. With men accounting for 75% of suicides in Australia, and societal expectations often discouraging them from seeking help, it is crucial to create environments where vulnerability is seen as a strength.
Harcourts aims to contribute to a culture that supports men in their roles as fathers, partners, colleagues, and carers.
"At Harcourts, we recognise the importance of celebrating the men in our lives and within our organisation," says Mitch Green (pictured), the Head of People and Culture at Harcourts.
"While we generally have no trouble recognising the contributions of men, International Men's Day gives us the opportunity to also recognise the sometimes-hidden struggles and challenges that men face.'
By focusing on the six key pillars of International Men's Day, including celebrating positive role models, improving gender relations, and focusing on men’s health, Harcourts hopes to foster a more inclusive and supportive world for everyone.
The company believes that promoting empathy, care, and the courage to seek help are essential leadership qualities that redefine modern masculinity and strengthen the community as a whole.
"We are committed to fostering an inclusive environment where all team members, including men, can thrive and succeed," adds Mitch Green.
"By challenging the 'harden up' and 'boys don't cry' narratives that have discouraged men from embracing their feelings and accepting support, by acknowledging and addressing men's specific needs and challenges, we create a more equitable workplace for everyone."
