1880s cottage brought into 21st century with full reno

With plenty of character and a full renovation, this 1880s Te Marua cottage has attracted plenty of interest.

Situated at 5 Plateau Road, “Stonestead” is a three-bedroom, one-bathroom colonial villa where timeless charm meets modern comfort.

The sellers, Kelvin and Tamara, bought the home from Tamara’s parents two years ago in order to step onto the property ladder.

Over the last six months, Kelvin and his father completed a full renovation on the property.

“I think we touched every inch of the property, but we really wanted to keep the character,” Kelvin said.

“We repainted the interior and exterior, recarpeted, redid the entire bathroom, and modernised the kitchen.

“There was an existing wooden bench in the kitchen and Tamara created a marble design and put resin over the top so it looks and feels like marble but it’s the original wooden bench.

“We replaced all the fixtures and fittings. We rescrewed the roof, treated it, and painted. Plus we redid the gutters.”

After living in the home and welcoming their first child, the couple have decided to move onto their next project. Kelvin said the property was pretty special.

“I think buyers will be attracted to the character. It has that niche villa look, but it feels modern,” he said.

“I think there will be someone who absolutely falls in love with it.”

The property is being marketed by Hamish Drumm from Ray White Kemeys Brothers on behalf of Kelvin and Tamara.

Hamish Drumm said he was enjoying the campaign, stating “not all homes are created equal”.

“We’ve had a variety of long staying inspections including first home buyers, curious people from the neighbourhood and a few people from Wellington city looking for a retreat in the beautiful Te Marua village,” he said.

“Everyone has been attracted to the wonderful character of the home.

“It boasts open plan living space with great natural light, fantastic for dinner parties and get-togethers, with a piano as one the chattels, perfect for entertaining.

“The home has its original pot belly wood burner which radiates warmth ambience and manifests a very homely vibe.

“It really is a rare offering - when this one sells I certainly don't have another.

“Kelvin and his dad have brought the property into the modern day but they’ve kept the old charm with an old-style verandah where you can just picture a rocking chair.”

The property is for sale by negotiation.
